Sacred Heart Win Senior Premier A

For the first time in their history, Sacred Heart College has won the Henning Cup for Wellington’s top school debating grade. The team of Wendy Zhu, Natasha Henden, Laura Kelly and Lorietta Bahr beat Scots College 2-1 in a rematch between the Grand Finalists of the Wellington Regional Schools’ Debating Championships earlier this year.

Sacred Heart successfully affirmed the motion “This House supports a 90 day probationary period for new employees.” Natasha Henden was awarded the Suffrage Cup for the best speaker in the Grand Final, awarded by the Hutt Valley Branch of the National Council for Women.

The runners-up Scots College team consisted of Henry Hillind, Aaron Rama and James Gavey. Scots were the defending champions of the grade, and Henry and James were members of last year’s winning team.

Adjudicating the debate was Wellington Speaking Union President Stephen Whittington, joined by New Zealand Schools Debating Team coach Clodagh O’Connor-McKenna and Wellington debating’s top billed adjudicator Ihaia Tichborne. The debate was chaired by the Premier A Convenor Sebastian Templeton.
